When we think about skincare, we often think superficial, what we see when we look in the mirror. It's so much more. As someone who has struggled with acne and combination dry/oily skin for many years, I have tried everything. It wasn't until recently that I became intrigued to dig deeper into the root cause of my skin problems. Long story short, it's a food intolerance issue, and I can use as many topical solutions as I wish, but it won't cure the problem, only mask it.
That is when I realized it is more about what we put in our bodies than on it.
To kick off the Winter Skincare Series, I am sharing two of the most important things I consume daily that benefit my skin from the inside out.
I know it is so cliche to mention water as an important factor in skincare, but it is essential! Just like every other part of your body, your skin is made up of many cells. And as we know, cells are mostly composed of water. With a lack of water, the cells and organs will not function properly. Specific impacts to your skin include: dryness, flakiness, and wrinkling.
To avoid those effects, drink the recommended 8 glasses of water (or more!) per day. I recommend drinking pure water throughout the day, but if you need to spice it up you can add citrus fruits or essential oils for flavor.
My favorite fruits to add are oranges, lemons, and strawberries.
I go into great detail about collagen and the benefits of collagen here. So now I just want to highlight the benefits of collagen specifically with our skincare routine. By taking collagen daily you can expect to see positive changes in your skin such as:
- Younger looking skin
- Improving skin moisture level and suppleness
- Improving skin smoothness
- Preventing the formation of deep wrinkles
- Help to protect connective tissues & restore muscles
I personally prefer Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides because they are flavorless and odorless. I add the collagen powder to my morning smoothies for a boost of protein as well as the many benefits of collagen.
When making changes to your skincare routine it is best to try one thing at a time to know what is working the best. In the many years that I have been experiencing with skincare regimens, this has been the best answer so far.
Add these two easy and essential skincare steps to your routine, and you'll be glowing in no time!
For the month of January I will be focusing on Winter Skincare to help you become a more confident and beautiful you! If you have questions about specific skincare items, I would love to chat! E-mail me here, or leave a comment below!
